Noteworthy Positive Characteristics: 
++ Determined - Mare Barrow is resilient to a fault. She will never, ever back down from anything, or let anything tear her down for long. She will fight until the finish. No matter what terrible things happen to her, she stands up and tries again. She has a goal in mind and will do anything to see it through. That includes taking lives. She knows she can't be forgiven for some things she's done but would still not change anything in order to save the world.

++ Passionate - If there's one thing in Mare that never wavers, it's her passion. She is very strong willed when it comes to her own beliefs and will fight endlessly for what she believes is right. She believes in a world where Reds (people with red blood as opposed to the upperclass "Silvers" with silver blood) are not oppressed and used by Silvers, thought of as disposable and replaceable. She believes in Reds and newbloods with all her heart and would do anything to pave the way to a brighter future for them. She feels so strongly about her beliefs that she can sometimes not hold back from what she feels and is even unable to put on a stoic face about it. She gets so angry at Maven on behalf of her beliefs at one point that she even launches herself at him and takes him by the collar, much to his surprise. All this while she was his prisoner and in chains. 

++ Clever - Countless times in the books, Mare has had to think fast and come up with plans to either save herself or save others. She's a quick thinker and very street smart, so she's able to act on her feet and solve complicated dilemmas. One particular example is when she plots to escape her prison just long enough to be able to get word of her status to another Red in Maven's castle. Escape is near impossible for her, but she is able to get a tiny window of freedom due to maneuvering the water in her bathroom to flood the room and distract her guards. This is just one of many instances where she uses her smarts and her surroundings to come up with a plan. Her cleverness is also why she is often confided in by her allies, wanting her input on what to do next (aside from the fact that she's the "lightning girl" and thus a figurehead of their rebellion, of course).

++ Loyal - Unlike her male counterparts, Mare's loyalty never wavers. She starts out loyal to herself and her family and remains loyal to them, even when it seems like she's abandoned them. She will do anything to keep her loved ones safe, and looks forward to a future where they live a good life, no matter how farfetched it may sometimes seem. Even when she is Mareena Titanos, posing as a Silver princess, she thinks only of keeping her family safe. She may not trust others very easily, but she always makes sure to have her own back and not let anything steer her from protecting herself and her loved ones. Even when Cal abandons her, she does not go running to him, but remains firm in her loyalties and carries on without him. 

Noteworthy Negative Characteristics:
-- Unforgiving - Once you've done something wrong in Mare's eyes, that's the end. She is absolutely unforgiving of things that have happened in the past to wrong her or her loved ones. Even if one were to apologize to her, the sting would remain and Mare would look differently upon that person from then on. The biggest example of this is understandably Maven, who betrayed her most profoundly, but there are smaller instances as well. She never forgives Cal for not standing up for Reds despite half falling in love with him. She keeps account of every time she's been wronged by people and uses that anger and betrayal to fuel her vengeance or push herself forward.

-- Stubborn - Once Mare has her mind set on something, you'd be hard pressed to get her to change. She is very stubborn from small things to bigger things. She even foregoes sleeping and eating sometimes so that she is able to remain on task and keep working toward her goals. The only thing that gets her to back down from that is when it deters her from doing a good job. She is so insistent on things that sometimes she ends up making enemies (like how she conscripts Cameron) and yet she doesn't care. As long as the job gets done, she's fine with it. She will put her foot down to anything she absolutely despises, even when she's a prisoner. It is very difficult to get her to change her mind once it's set on something. 

-- Dishonest - Mare is a liar. Not only does she lie to other people, but she lies to herself. She constantly tells others that it's going to be okay, or that everything is going fine, even when it isn't. And she battles with herself over her own feelings, especially those regarding Maven. She's dishonest out of good intentions, but dishonest nonetheless. She's fully aware of this too, but doesn't really know how to stop it. She even refers to different parts of her as "masks" she wears, such as when she wants to ask Maven about the Measures and puts on a face she calls "confusion". Mare will probably always tell you what you want to hear, or else whatever will serve her own amibitions the best. 

Character Fears: Mare's number one fear is being alone. She also fears losing her lightning, and the death of her brother Shade (which already happened) and her friend Kilorn.
Powers/Abilities: Mare is a talented pickpocket, having worked as a thief for much of her young life. 

She also has the power of electrokinesis. She can create and manipulate electricity. She "feels" electricity flowing through her and can not only create and control it, but tell where all the electrical items are in an area (i.e. how many security cameras there are within a small vicinity).
